Berbatov Back to Face Liverpool -- His Farewell?

First the news from the official site:

The 23-goal striker missed last weekend's win at Reading with a slight groin injury but has returned to full training this week. "He's recovered and the injury isn't a problem," reported Juande Ramos on Thursday afternoon. Teemu Tainio is also back in training after an Achilles injury.

and then these comments from Juande:

"No. I understand perfectly well that big clubs want to sign him. I've spoken to him many times and know exactly what he wants.

"I would obviously like him to stay here but we don't know how future negotiations will go so it is something I cannot guarantee.

If it is Berby's last game, I hope he scores a hat trick -- thanks for the goals and thrills Berby!

Young Spurs Playing Well

It is really good to see the strides being made by the young Spurs lads -- check out the home page for all the details:

Our Academy will slug it out with Sevilla for a place in the semi-finals of the Tournoi International de Football de Monthey in Switzerland after beating FC Sion 3-1 on Thursday night.

The lads recovered in style from their opening night defeat against Real Murcia on Wednesday for a comfortable victory in the second of three group matches in this Under-20 tournament.

Tomas Pekhart's penalty and Jake Livermore's (pictured) 20-yard strike put us in the driving seat in the 70-minute match played in Aigle. Danny Rose extended the lead to 3-0 in the second half before a late consolation for FA Sion.

Coach Alex Inglethorpe reported: "It was a good reaction after the defeat against Murcia, very positive.

"Having said that, we were a bit lacklustre in the first half but we managed to go 2-0 up. Tomas Pekhart was brought down in the box for a penalty after 10 minutes, picked himself up and scored from the spot and Jake Livermore made it 2-0 with a decent strike from outside the box after 25 minutes.

"We were better in the second half and made it 3-0 after 60 minutes when Danny Hutchins took a quick free-kick to send Danny Rose away and he finished well. They pulled a goal back late on.

Poyet on the End of the Season

"I think we played a great game. It was always going to be difficult because of what Reading are playing for, but I'm very pleased with our performance. We kept the ball well, created chances and kept a clean sheet. We totally deserved the win, although it's obviously frustrating when you dominate a match so much and only score one goal. There's one week to go of the season now and the first thing we have to do is win against Liverpool next week. Then comes the other side of the job - the phone calls, the meetings and making sure we are all totally prepared for the challenges of next season."

Good points made by Poyet as usual. The Reading game was important because it allowed us to play our type of game and we saw Bent play well with Robbie up front.

To be honest though, at this point we have at least one eye on the summer and the 2008-9 season.

re: Should Ramos be imagining life without Lennon?

This blog piece in the Guardian "Should Ramos be imagining life without Lennon?" by Paul Doyle really does take the biscuit. Out of nothing of any major significance, a few stats here and a few comments from supporters there, it suggests that there is a case for Lennon to be sold by Spurs.

The blog actually starts with this stunning claim:

According to the White Hart Lane rumour mill, there are only six Spurs players whom Juande Ramos wants to keep this summer: Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane, Alan Hutton, Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Gareth Bale. If that's true, Jermaine Jenas could consider himself unlucky, as might Tom Huddlestone, who at times during his short career has looked like an English Jan Molby. But perhaps the most surprising reject would be Aaron Lennon - because for a while the shortest player in the Premier League was the next big thing in English football. The question now is: would Ramos be wrong to write him off?

What a load of tosh. What about the players bought this winter such as Gunter from Cardiff and the England internationals like Jenas and the Hudd.
I don't buy this at all to be honest -- I suspect we will see some tweaking in the squad this summer but not wholesale changes.
This is yet another indication that we have hit the silly season for transfer news.

A Season Drifting to a Close

That seems to be the reality for Spurs at the moment. Whether we like it or not, it seems that most of the players are now looking forward to the summer and the season to follow. This is not what we as fans would like to see and I am a tad bit worried that Juande has not got them flying until the end. It may be that he and Gus Poyet feel that they will learn as much from the players at this stage without pushing them – perhaps they will see who is self motivated and who requires a kick up the rear.

It is a funny position for the fans to be in. Of course we won a trophy this season and feel really good about that but at the same time we have become used to end of the season games with a lot to play for. Two seasons ago we were very close to that key fourth spot, only to lose it in cruel fashion, and then last season we ended up charging in late and getting the fifth spot at the end of the season.

As our eyes turn to the summer we will have to consider who comes in and who leaves. Before then we should probably cheer the squad who got us the cup even if we have drifted a wee bit since then – so to all you lads – cheers!
